Navigation Changes in PeopleTools 8.51

In our recent "What's New With PeopleTools" webinar, one of the things that we showed is a slight change in navigation from PeopleTools 8.50.

In PeopleTools 8.50, the default navigation changed from the classic left-hand navigation menu to drop down menus from the top of the page. Clicking on the drop down menu from the top of the page the list of submenus and direct links would show up.

When submenus were available, PeopleTools 8.50 would display the popout submenu when your mouse hovered over the submenu text (with a short delay before activating). Here we see the Manager Self Service menu popping open as we hover it with the mouse.

Clicking on the actual submenu text would pull up the folder navigation page. The navigation path that led to this point is shown as breadcrumbs along the top.

This behavior has changed in PeopleTools 8.51 to now only display the submenu when you actually click on the submenu text.

There's a nice writeup on the UX Movement website that discusses why this new behavior in PeopleTools 8.51 is actually the proper way to handle it. The article is not specific to PeopleTools though; they are discussing it for general web applications.

One thing that the change does mean is the folder navigation pages are essentially non-existent in PeopleTools 8.51 when using the drop down menus. The folder navigation pages are still there, but they are only accessible with the drop down menus if you right click on one the submenu links and select open in new window (or open in new tab).

Of course, there are still options available to use the older left hand navigation in 8.50 and 8.51. Under PeopleTools -> Portal -> General Settings you can choose whether you want the drop down navigation or keeping the left hand navigation instead.
